Difficult to send goods from Bangalore to Hyderabad': PM Modi slams opposition for old tax-regime; cites this foreign report in speech
The Prime Minister referred to the reforms as being the start of a new chapter in India’s economic history, adding that under the previous taxation system prior to his government taking power in 2014, the country’s traders were trapped in a maze of different taxes.
"For decades, the country's traders were trapped in a maze of different taxes. When India took the step of GST reform in 2017, it was the start of creating a new chapter in history,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the opposition said on Sunday, Indian businesses faced problems as a result of the old taxation system in the addressing the nation on the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms legislation set to start on September 22.
PM Modi also referred to a foreign newspaper article that discusses the changes that a company faced in shipping goods 500 km from Bangalore to Hyderabad, stating "After I became Prime Minister in 2014, a foreign newspaper reported on the problems of a company, and explained how hard it was for the goods to travel 500 km from Bangalore to Hyderabad” referring to the report, written by the British financial newspaper Financial Times.
