Over 7 crore ITRs have been submitted till date; netizens are complaining of glitches in efiling portal.

On Monday (September 15, 2025), the Income Tax Department reported that more than 7 crore income tax (I-T) returns have been filed as the deadline approaches, even as netizens have taken to social media to highlight glitches in the portal and to call for an extension. Despite the outcry, the department did not indicate that the deadline for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and others who are not required to get their accounts audited for the financial year 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) would be extended.

According to the department: "More than 7 crore ITRs filed and counting (15th September)." It urged everyone who hasn't filed the ITR for AY 2025-26 to file their return. The last date for filing the ITR without penalty is September 15 for income earned in fiscal 2024-25. The last year, the department received 7.28 crore ITRs until the due date of July 31.

A number of chartered accountants and others have aired grievances on social media over the past couple of days claiming that the I-T portal is experiencing glitches while making tax payments and downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS).
